Eterotopia

Heterotopia investigates the cruise ship as Marc Augé’s quintessential non-place—a highly standardized, artificial city at sea designed for illusion and consumption. Through a week of direct observation, the project exposes how behind the luxury lies a rigid, claustrophobic environment that mirrors societal hierarchies. Using high-contrast black-and-white photography, wide perspectives, and harsh artificial light, the visuals emphasize spatial disorientation through mirrors and synthetic decor. Human figures are intentionally faceless, reduced to shadows or captured fragmented or from behind to highlight their alienation.

The photographs in this project represent places and spaces; for this reason, I believe it is essential that they be exhibited in a physical location—one capable of evoking similar sensations experienced and lived aboard the cruise ship.
